Born in Seoul, South Korea, Soprano Jayoung Yoon has recently completed a string of successful debuts and performances in the past year. In April of 2003 Ms. Yoon made her New York City debut singing the role of Pamina in The Magic Flute with the Lyric Opera of New York. In October of 2003 she also debut with The Fargo Moorhead Opera Company as Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte. Additionally, Ms. Yoon had the opportunity to be the cover for Maria in Gulgielmo Ratcliff with the Teatro Grattacielo at the Lincoln Center and in March of 2004 she made her debut singing the role Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with The Amarillo Opera.
In 2005 she debut singing Micaela in Carmen with One World Symphony , singing Noe in Susie Ibarra’s new opera Shangri-La in New York City and singing Natalia in Leoncavallo’s Zaza with the Teatro Grattacielo at Lincoln Center. Also, Ms. Yoon has appeared as a soprano soloist for Beethoven’s Mass in C Major with The Middle Town Choral, for Mozart’s Mass in C Minor with Peniel Concert Choir at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Concert in France by Academie Musicale de Villecroze and concert by Opera les Azuriales. Last Summer she was invited to work with Soprano Jessye Norman in Villecroze, France.
She was also invited to sing at the newly elected Governor of Minnesota’s inauguration ceremony in St. Paul, Minnesota. But most significantly, Ms. Yoon recently returned from her Israeli debut as Blanche de la Force in Dialogues of the Carmelites, a performance in which Ms. Yoon was described by the Israeli press, HAARETZ, as “an exquisite, young Korean soprano who performed her role convincingly and with strong characterization.”
As a member of the Austin Lyric Opera’s Young Artist Program, Ms. Yoon had the opportunity to perform many significant roles with the company. These include Lula in Carlisle Floyd’s Cold Sassy Tree, Micaela in Carmen, and Gilda in Rigoletto. This performance was reviewed by Opera News “Lyric Soprano Jayoung Yoon revealed a limpid legato, touching throughout…” Besides these, Ms. Yoon has performed an impressive array of other roles including Mimi and Musetta in La Boheme, Clorinda in La Cenerentola, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Countess in Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Nanetta in Falstaff, Marguerite in Faust, as well as First Lady in The Magic Flute. In addition to her operatic roles, Ms. Yoon has appeared as a guest soloist for Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Schubert’s Mass in G major, and Mozart’s Kronugsmesse with the Seoul Symphony, the Bach Festival Orchestra, Full Gospel Orchestra, and Symphony of Lakes. Also she has been performing many recitals in Dublin, Ireland, France, Israel, Mexico, Minnesota, Michigan, California and Texas.
While pursuing her B.M. and M.M. from Seoul National University, Ms. Yoon was honored with a S.N.U. scholarship for the duration of her studies. However Ms. Yoon’s earliest honor came while still in high school, receiving a full scholarship from The Taepeungyang. Besides academic honors, Ms. Yoon has numerous other awards including 1st Prize Winner of the Veronica Dunn International Singing Competition, which resulted in a opportunity to perform in Dublin, Ireland. She was also the 1st Prize Winner of the District Metropolitan Audition, Special Award of the upper Midwest Regional Auditions for the Metropolitan Opera National Council. Additionally, she was the 1st Prize and Best Performer Award Winner of The Schubert Club Competition, and the recipient of the Best Performer Award in The International Friedrich Schorr Singing Competition. Ms. Yoon also received a Jorma Hynninen Fellowship as well as the Dr. and Mrs. John W. Shore fellowship.
Most recently, Ms. Yoon was the 2nd prize and Audience Choice Winner of the Verisimo Voice Competition in New York. Ms. Yoon will be performing Frasquita in Carmen with The Duluth Superior Symphony , Gala Concerts with New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra and solo recitals in Dallas, Chicago, St. Paul in Minnesota, Albany , New York city and Seoul, Korea.
